Brownfield Premises in Via Rubattino

Short Overview

The commercial property owned by the city is located in via Raffaele Rubattino n. 6r, ground floor, within the area called Darsena, which is part of the Central East Municipality.

The transformation of the Darsena (the Dock) into a commercial emporium began in the late nineteenth century when the Municipality prepared a general arrangement project (1889) which involved the construction of multi-storey buildings for warehouse use alongside the Famagusta and Galata.

The new "districts", whose names derived from the ancient Portofranco, also with the names of the ancient Genoese colonies (Caffa, Metelino, Cembalo, Tabarca and Scio) were finished between 1895 and 1898. During the fascist period the Darsena was intended for the reception, sorting and storage of cured meats in particular and food in general.

The area with the progressive change of port logistics gradually lost its importance until it became part of a wider redevelopment project started in the 90s.

The commercial area, currently in disuse, has a net surface area of 38 sqm, consists of four rooms and is equipped with toilets; it is about 250 m from the Galata - Museo del Mare and from the headquarters of the University of Genoa - Department of Economics. In the nearby buildings there are offices and numerous economic activities.
