Brownfield Forte Begato

Short Overview

Forte Begato is a fortified building included in the “Mura Nuove”(New Walls) to defend the city of Genoa. It was built on a vast plateau along the branch of the defensive wall that descended from Forte Sperone along the ridge of the Val Polcevera. It takes its name from the underlying town of Begato, a fraction of the Genoese district of Rivarolo, on the external side of the walls.

Forte Begato consists of a large quadrangular barracks, structured partly on two floors and partly on three, with four bastions at the corners and a central courtyard. The upper terrace was originally protected by a pitched roof with slate tiles, restored during the last renovation, although different from the original one.

The structure housed a garrison of 340 soldiers but there could be over 800 in case of need. The artillery equipment included 14 cannons of various sizes, five howitzers and numerous smaller pieces.

The plateau on which the fort stands was included within the seventeenth-century walls. In 1818 the Savoy government built the barracks on this site, the construction of which continued until 1830. Between 1832 and 1836 the bastion fence which overlooks the current street was completed, isolating the complex from the city.

The fort can be reached from Righi along via del Peralto and overlooks the panoramic main road, shortly after passing the dirt road that leads to Forte Sperone.
