Brownfield Former Martinez Hospital

Short Overview

The building complex of the former Martinez Hospital is located in Pegli, a district of the western part of Genoa; located in an easily accessible point (SS 1 a few meters away), it benefits from a unique position and panorama.

The building was built at the behest of Giovanni Martinez, who in 1875 had assigned his own palace and adjacent land to the convent complex of S. Antonio Abate for the construction of a hospital for the benefit of the poor of the then municipalities of Pegli and Prà; built in the last decades of the nineteenth century and remaining in use for over a century, it was abandoned in the 1990s.

The edifice, consisting of two separate buildings, is owned by Arte jointly with ASL 3, which uses the entire lower section and two floors of the main building as a health facility; it is also granted the right to use part of the outside underground area facing the complex.

After years of abandonment, restoration works are under way for a residential and / or tourist-hotel redevelopment; the property, with the exception of the ASL 3 part, is currently in disuse.

The following is anticipated in the intervention method: internal building renovation maintaining the current volumes for the main body, building replacement with a 20% increase in volume for the recently built bodies and the construction of private underground car parks belonging to the functions installed.
